As I start to share all these science fiction, fantasy, mystery and romance book recommendations in blog post form, I have to admit it’s interesting seeing much more detailed these recommendations have become in 2023. Yet these book recommendations are important to read because before writers become writers, they are readers. Therefore, please enjoy these fantasy and science fiction book recommendations from September 2022.
Maelstrom By Kristine Kathryn Rusch
Whilst I thankfully finished up a terrible science fiction anthology that I will NOT be recommending whatsoever last night, I wanted to recommend a very intriguing book that was also science fiction. So this week's book recommendation is Maelstrom by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. I read this really interesting book a while ago and if you think there is only one way to tell a story in the 21st century then you really, really need to read this great book. As instead of it being a "normal" story it's more of a journalistic report of fictional events, and I fully admit at first I was a little unsure about this style before I read the book. But what you need to remember is that this is thee Kristine Kathryn Rusch master storyteller, and she reminded me to definitely take risks in stories, because this book is brilliantly done and it's written in such a way that it really does hold you to the end, because we have all read newspaper articles or journalistic reports that are awful. This is completely different (besides from it being fiction). So if you want an outstanding piece of science fiction to enjoy this week taking you on a great mystery adventure exploring a deadly incident then you really have gone to buy this enthralling novella. Because you really will not be disappointed.
Morning Song By Dean Wesley Smith
Returning to a science fiction series I read last week, this week I really want to recommend "Morning Song" by Dean Wesley Smith because this third book in his Seeders universe is brilliant and a great read from the first to last word. The reason why you really need to read it is because it's a great sci-fi adventure with characters facing impossible problems, impossible threats and there's a great romantic story throughout the entire book, adding some brilliant extra depth to the story and making it a lot richer. Also, personally, I liked it because it had great new and old characters that if you've read the other books in the series then it's like seeing some old friends about, as there are some characters in some past books, and those characters are great. But it also has a lot of new characters that are really interesting to read and see them grow over the course of the story. Also as a reader that's read two of the later books in the series, it's interesting to see what the Seeders' technology has changed over the series and that just helps to bring the book alive even more. So if you want a brilliant, enthralling science fiction book to enjoy this week, definitely check out Morning Sony by Dean Wesley Smith. You will not regret it in the slightest.
Double-Booked by Kevin J. Anderson
For today's great book recommendation I really have to recommend a brilliant book I got through a Kickstarter recently called Double-Booked by Kevin J. Anderson. It's the first full-length Dan Shamble book I've had the pleasure of reading and I really enjoyed it. For readers who aren't familiar with Dan Shamble, you really are missing out because he's a Zombie Private Investigator. Now personally I don't like zombie books because sometimes I just feel like they are so overdone and so samey that I just don't like reading them. But of course Kevin J. Anderson knows exactly how to tell great, sensational stories with all characters, just not zombies. So from witches, to librarians to ghosts and more, there are plenty of enthralling characters in this great book to enjoy as you follow Dan through missing neighbours, evil magic and so much amazing content you really won't want to leave. And I have to admit I did enjoy Dan's half-vampire daughter, she was a great character from start to finish. So I definitely think I'll be buying more of the series over time because they are really engaging and amazing books, and if you want to enjoy the adventures and cases of Dan Shamble then definitely check out this book. Available on Pre-order for November at all major ebook and print book retailers. I seriously cannot recommend it enough.
Time For Cool Madness By Dean Wesley Smith
Apologies for the late post today but I've been busy with the return to university and other projects. Yet this week's book recommendation is definitely a personal favourite that I read a few months ago and I still love it months later. It's 'Time For Cool Madness' by Dean Wesley Smith. Personally, I love anything to do with Marble Grant, a brilliant, gripping Ghost Agent character from Dean's bestselling Poker Boy universe. And like all Marble Grant short stories, this collection is filled with sensational stories that will make you instantly fall in love with these brilliant characters, you'll want them to succeed and you will leave this collection feeling amazing but really wanting more of these wonderful stories. Thankfully there are a lot of Marble Grant stories to enjoy. And something I personally love about this series is that these characters really do make you smile and sometimes laugh out loud. Their comments, attitudes and just everything about them is great and you will not regret picking up this collection at all. So if you're looking for your next great read this week, then seriously look no further!
