Reading science fiction, fantasy and mystery books aren’t the only way that I learn about stories and inspire my writing. Films and television programmes play a major part in my fiction writing too. That’s why I love to offer up recommendations to readers and watchers so I can share movies and TV programmes that I love and seriously passionate about. Therefore, I hope you enjoy these various mystery, fantasy, science fiction and occasionally romance films and TV recommendations. The recommendations in this post are the ones I made in April 2023.
Star Wars Prequels
Considering that I launched a science fiction Kickstarter this week, I really want to recommend the Star Wars prequels and whilst this is an extremely controversial opinion, the prequels are my favourite. Personally, I love them. I think the political bits, the space battles and the story that explains how Anakin became Darth Vader is wonderfully done. And I love the fantasy elements of the force and the Jedi. Also, I really like it that you get to see what the Jedi were like at the "height" of their power. Even though I don't think that term's right at all. I like it that you get to see what the Jedi Council was like, the Jedi temple and how the Republic functioned. There is so much background that the prequels add and there are so many world-building elements that the later films just don't have. They're brilliant in my opinion, so if you want some great science fiction films to watch this week definitely check out the prequels of Star Wars. They're The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of The Sith.
Galaxy Quest
I fully admit that this week’s science fiction film recommendation is a little weird (at least for me) but I did enjoy “Galaxy Quest”. Now I had to watch this film for a workshop and I could tell by the title that there is no way in hell I would ever watch it normally. This science fiction comedy just isn’t my normal go-to film to enjoy on a Sunday night, but this one really surprised me. Personally, I never normally like the science fiction trope of humans getting mistaken by aliens for war heroes. Since I never find it that believable but Galaxy Quest really made it work, it was funny and I later discovered there were tons of great throwbacks to Star Trek and other science fiction films and programmes. The adventure was silly, funny and it was such a feel good film that it was definitely worth watching. And the characters were so good too, especially as they were throwbacks to Star Trek themselves, so this is a perfect funny film for science fiction fans of all ages. Even more so as it basically pokes fun at the majority of science fiction tropes. If you want a funny science fiction comedy that is actually fun this weekend, then definitely check out Galaxy Quest. I watched it on Prime Video but I’m sure it’s out on other places. Enjoy.
The Mandolorian
Personally, I absolutely love The Mandalorian on Disney+ and I’m actually willing to say it is the best science fiction TV programme out there and that’s why I’m recommending it. Of course I love it because of Baby Yoda. He really does always steal the show because he is really cleverly written since he is still a baby, he acts like a baby and he is flat out hilarious like a baby. But he is also intelligent, adds to the cast and he isn’t a burden at all. Also, I like how the writers do the “endangerment” scenes because no one like watching child endangerment because the writers have set up the entire programme so you know nothing’s ever going to happen to Baby Yoda in a bad way. That’s a serious relief. The character casting is brilliant as well. Since the character arc of Mando (the main character and I am not writing out his full name, as it’s too complex for a social media post) is really well done. He’s meant to be a tough character without a heart, but it’s great to see how much he cares, loves and treasures Baby Yoda and that’s really sweet to see. And the plot of each episode is great too. There is never a slow moment, you’re often surprised that 40 minutes have already gone past and the ending of each season is always satisfying. I’m still halfway through season 3 but it is great so far and I’m looking forward to finishing it. Overall, if you want an absolutely brilliant science fiction programme to watch this weekend then definitely check out The Mandalorian it is sensational.
Castle
Even though "Castle" with Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic has been finished for a few years I still really like it and want to recommend it to everyone interested in mystery programmes. Since it was sweet, funny and the unresolved sexual tension between Castle and Beckett made the programme a lot of fun. And even after they had gotten together, the fun factor didn't decrease at all because it was still fun and interesting to watch. The cases were always hard puzzles to solve with you never really knowing who did it before the end so you had to keep watching it. Then the thing that really set the programme apart from other crime programmes (besides the fact that Castle was a writer) was the great relationships, connections and love between all the other characters. Like the mother and daughter that made the programme even more funny and worthwhile watching. If you're looking for a good crime programme this weekend then definitely check out Castle. You won't be sorry for did.
